  • Membership Manager
  • Classification: Full-Time, Exempt

    Department: Membership

    Reports To: VP of Community Engagement

    Direct Reports: Yes

    Position Overview:

    The SCI Membership Manager develops the strategies and implements the overall plan for renewal and acquisition, member relations and membership communications. Position is responsible for achieving annual revenue and sales goals.  

    Responsibilities:

    • Develop strategies, implement tactics and manage SCI’s Membership Program to reach established revenue and sales goals
    • Responsible for full understanding of SCI’s Membership Program to communicate and administer the program effectively including promotions, direct mail, solicitations and events
    • Apply analytics to membership data to improve sales, revenue and program outcomes
    • Work with SCI staff and volunteers to cultivate a Membership Program that serves the community and supports the programming at SCI; initiate new projects and innovative ideas to build membership programs
    • Coordinate and participate with community partners in managing the promotion and execution of SCI, Blank Park Zoo and Living History Farms Combo and Tri Membership Program and oversee accurate accounting and recordkeeping
    • Develop and manage monthly membership renewal emails, mailings and telemarketing
    • Organize and serve as a liaison to volunteers helping with membership activities
    • Provide training to Retail Operations Team to execute selling of memberships on-site
    • Develop the Membership Program budget and control expenses
    • Professionally represent SCI in all contact with donors, members and visitors; provide excellent customer service
    • Develop and maintain, with the help of the Communications Department, up-to-date promotional plans and materials; manage marketing supplies in a timely, cost-efficient fashion
    • Demonstrate proficiency in specialized program software, including Explorer; update and maintain computer database to correspond with new, renewed and expired membership and produce reports as needed
    • Use good recordkeeping practices in hard files, electronic files and databases; oversee that others are keeping good records
    • Serve on internal staffing teams to proactively manage the business of SCI
    • Work with other team members in a positive, constructive manner offering feedback and encouraging development of skills
    • Serve the institution with respect to confidentiality of sensitive matters and make decisions with the best interest of SCI in mind
    • Other duties as assigned

    Requirements:

    • A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field is preferred; extensive experience and appropriate skills may offset the lack of degree
    • Program management or marketing experience preferred
    • Excellent customer service skills required; must have a high level of comfort and capacity for working with the public and must use sound judgment to resourcefully resolve conflicts and issues that arise
    • Must have demonstrated success with previous positions held
    • Must be well-organized with attention to detail
    • Must be able to contribute constructively to various teams as an active participant
    • Strong analytical skills
    • Strong critical thinking skills with good vision for opportunities to ensure the membership program’s success
    • Ability to work as a part of a team and individually to develop clear action plans that support the mission of SCI and SCI’s overall goals
    • Must be trustworthy and of high integrity, showing high respect for confidential member  information
    • Must be proficient with computer software with preference to Microsoft Word and Excel and also the donor database management

    Working Hours:

    This position is regular full-time hours including some weekends. Must be able to attend occasional meetings and events on nights and weekends and work non-traditional hours.

  • Visitor Services Associate
  • Classification: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

    Department: Retail Operations

    Reports To: Box Office Coordinator

    Position Overview: The Visitor Services Associate is a member of the Retail Operations Team, the first and last line of contact at the Science Center of Iowa. The Retail Operations Team is responsible for ensuring a positive experience for the visitor at all times. The Retail Operations Team includes the Box Office, A-Ha! Store, Blank IMAX Dome Theater, Food Chain Café, school/group sales, birthday parties and facility rentals.

    Responsibilities:

    • Greet all guests promptly and in a friendly manner
    • Give accurate information to the visitors 100% of the time
    • Complete all transactions accurately and efficiently
    • Prepare accurate daily balance reports
    • Maintain a clean, neat, and well-stocked work area
    • While taking tickets, greet and welcome all visitors and groups into the Blank IMAX Dome theater
    • Assist any visitors or groups that may need extra time getting into the theater
    • Maintain a high level of cleanliness inside and outside the theater
    • Communicate effectively and appropriately over the phone, radio and through e-mailwith all SCI staff
    • Be ready to assist within all areas of the Retail Operations Team
    • Report to work in a timely manner
    • Maintain flexibility to work days, nights, weekends and holidays
    • Attend mandatory quarterly staff meetings
    • Perform other tasks, as assigned

    Requirements:

    • Previous cash handling experience required. Retail experience preferred.
    • Pleasant, outgoing and professional personality at all times
    • The ability to work well with the public or all ages and backgrounds and be comfortable in crowded situation while communicating effectively
    • Must be honest, dependable and able to work independently and with a team
    • Must be flexible to work in multiple areas throughout the day
    • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
    • Well groomed, clean and presentable
    • Ability to multi-task in a fun, loud, and high-energy environment
    • Ability to stand for long periods of time as well as stoop, bend and climb stairs

    Working Hours: Varies with SCI and IMAX operating hours, but will include evening, weekend, Holiday and some daytime hours.

  • Cafe Associate
  • Classification: Part-time, Non-exempt

    Position Overview:

    This position is expected to provide exceptional guest service to all patrons visiting SCI’s Food Chain Café.   Under guided leadership from the Café Coordinator and the Director Retail Operations, the Café Associate will also be responsible for operational duties, as assigned, to ensure a satisfactory experience for all guests and patrons visiting SCI. 

    Responsibilities:

    • Maintain a commitment to excellent guest service in Café and all areas of SCI
    • Greet and tend to the needs of all guests in a timely manner
    • Processing all cash and credit card Point-of-Sale transactions accurately
    • Provide knowledgeable information regarding product offerings and general SCI information for guests
    • Accurately check all identification necessary to ensure patrons meet minimum age requirements for the purchase of alcohol products
    • Maintain the cleanliness of tables, floors, counters and windows
    • Maintain optimum food safety standards as required
    • Stock, Merchandise and Inventory Café supplies and products
    •  Assist Café Coordinator with various tasks and duties as assigned

    Requirements:

    • Must be of legal age to sell alcoholic beverages in accordance with the State of Iowa
    • Must have food service, retail, and/or strong customer service related experience
    • Must maintain a professional and polite demeanor at all times
    • Enjoy working with people in a public setting
    • Have great problem solving skills
    • Needs to have accurate and efficient bookkeeping/money handling skills
    • Well groomed, clean, and presentable
    • Ability to multi-task various duties and projects
    • Ability to lift 35 lbs. 
    • Must uphold the values and integrity of the Science Center of Iowa

    Working Hours:

    Part-time hours varying between the hours of operation for SCI and the Blank IMAX Dome Theater – this may include a combination of shifts during days, nights, weekends and holidays.

    Position Overview:

    This position is expected to provide exceptional guest service to all patrons of the Science Center of Iowa, especially at any special events, to guests or clients. Under guided leadership from the Café Coordinator and the Director of Retail Operations, the Bartender Associate will also be responsible for operational duties as assigned, to ensure a satisfactory experience for all guests, patrons, and clients of the Science Center of Iowa.

    Responsibilities:

    •  Independently execute bar operations for internal and external events and facility rentals
    •  Accurately process all cash and credit card transactions
    • Consistently check identification of guests to ensure patrons meet minimum age requirements for alcohol purchases
    •  Maintain cleanliness of work area
    •  Maintain optimal food safety practices
    • Stock merchandise and inventory as needed
    • Assist Café Coordinator with tasks and duties related to events
    • Additional duties as assigned

    Requirements:

    •  Must be of legal age to sell alcohol in accordance with Iowa Laws
    •  Must have food & beverage service, retail, and strong customer service experience
    • Must have a personable, enthusiastic, and engaging personality
    •  Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment
    • Must be able to multi-task and accomplish various duties
    •  Must be flexible, open-minded and able to react to guest and organizational needs
    • Ability to lift a minimum of 35 lbs.
    • Knowledge of alcoholic beverages
    • Well groomed, clean, and presentable
    • Must uphold the integrity of SCI

    Working Hours:

    Part-time hours will be assigned to support special events in addition to daily operations.  Shifts may include some evenings, weekends and holidays.

  • Classification: Full Time, Non-Exempt

    Department: Preschool

    Reports To: Early Childhood Director

    Scope: SCI Preschool Master Teachers develop and implement the curriculum to meet the goals of the Science Center of Iowa’s Preschool program.

    Responsibilities:

    • Complete weekly lesson plans tied to Iowa Early Learning Standards and differentiated for all learners
    • Implement the Creative Curriculum, the Project Approach and STEM daily
    • Design and upkeep an appropriate, safe natural classroom environment
    • Meet with the Assistant Teacher to devise daily plans and prepare materials for daily use
    • Communicate weekly with families through email and phone calls
    • Design and carry out behavior plans as needed in partnership with families
    • Prepare and conduct parent-teacher conferences twice a year
    • Attend and assist with parent-preschooler special events during the school year as scheduled
    • Follow all policies and procedures of the Science Center of Iowa and the SCI Preschool
    • Be subject to evaluation at least once annually and open to regular observation and coaching
    • Attend all SCI Preschool staff meetings and SCI All Staff meetings
    • Buy into and uphold the SCI Commitment to Excellence
    • Complete all hiring requirements within the first 90 days of hire or earlier if specified

    Requirements:

    • BA/BS degree in early childhood education or other education degree, with early childhood endorsement
    • Current license or certification in the state of Iowa
    • Maintain current teaching certificate
    • Maintain current First Aid and CPR credentials
    • Obtain and maintain a Chauffeur’s License for transporting during field trips
    • Acquire 10 continuing education hours each year
    • Have a physical examination and TB test every two years
    • Must have teaching experience in the public school systems and/or preschool teaching experience
    • Has a deep understanding of developmentally appropriate practices
    • Has a passion and love for all young children and their families
    • Desires to be a team player
    • Possesses character qualities such as patience, creativity, flexibility, joyfulness and endurance

    Working Hours: Monday through Friday during the school year. Summer hours are dictated by the needed schedule.

    Requirements:

    • Para associate I and II or CDA or AA in Early Childhood
    • Current certification in the state of Iowa
    • Maintain current First Aid and CPR credentials
    • Obtain and maintain a Chauffeur’s License for transporting during field trips
    • Acquire 10 continuing education hours each year
    • Have a physical examination and TB test every two years
    • Must have teaching experience in the public school systems and/ or preschool teaching experience
