  • Director of Advancement
  • Classification: Full-Time/ Exempt

    Department: Advancement

    Reports To: Vice President of Community Engagement

    Direct Reports: Development Coordinator, Grant Writer and Special Events Coordinator

    Scope: The Director of Advancement is responsible for all fundraising and development activities. This employee will cultivate existing and new relationships to build SCI’s visibility and financial resources for long-term sustainability. The Director of Advancement will oversee capital, endowment and operating campaigns by coordinating and cultivating individual, corporate, government and foundation support.

    Responsibilities:

    • Develop and implement fundraising plans to support the SCI strategic and operating plans through capital campaigns, annual campaigns, special projects, sponsorships, grants and government funding
    • Expand and diversify SCI’s donor base, donor pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives and exhibits
    • Develop and maintain relationships with the SCI Board of Directors, community leaders, philanthropists and government officials to cultivate support for SCI projects
    • Develop and write proposals, grants, copy and agreements to accomplish goals and objectives
    • Contact by phone, in writing or in person the individuals and entities appropriate to accomplish goals and objectives
    • Mentor philanthropy throughout the organization from staff to volunteers
    • Professionally represent the Science Center of Iowa in all contacts with donors, volunteers, community representatives, corporate and foundation representatives
    • Propose and develop new projects and innovative ideas to build fundraising program
    • Lead major annual fundraising event
    • Other duties as assigned

    Requirements:

    • A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field
    • Extensive fundraising preferred with 2-5 years of experience securing major gifts, grants, sponsorships, and annual contributions; media relations
    • Be well-organized with an attention to detail and the ability to work independently
    • Able to contribute constructively to various teams as an active participant and productively engage with others throughout the organization
    • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with a good vision for opportunities to enhance the success of SCI
    • Able to work on multiple projects and proposals simultaneously and to meet established deadlines
    • Trustworthy and of high integrity, showing high respect for confidential donor information
    • Must be flexible
    • Must demonstrate effective communication skills while multi-tasking a variety of projects and tasks
    • Proficient with computer software with preference to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and donor database management
    • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs

    Working Hours: This position will require attendance to some meetings and events on nights, weekends and extended hours. Primarily regular office hours, Monday through Friday.

  • IMAX Dome Theater Projectionist
  • Classification: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

    Department: IMAX / Retail Operations

    Reports To: Chief IMAX Projectionist

    Job Overview: This position will operate SCI's IMAX Projection System and related components.

    Responsibilities:

    • Operates and maintains IMAX Dome Theater Projector, sound system and all ancillary equipment used in theater programs on a daily basis to ensure continuous and flawless operation
    • Perform preventative and emergency maintenance on projection, sound and ancillary theater equipment
    • Ensure efficient operation and cleanliness of theater equipment and mechanical spaces
    • Ensure the quality of the IMAX Dome Theater experience to all guests
    • Deliver presentations and answers questions about the theater projection systems to staff and guests
    • Other duties as assigned

    Requirements:

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • Bachelors or Technical degree preferred
    • Must have mentality and aptitude for electronics and computers
    • Ability to lift 50 pounds
    • Ability to follow technical instructions
    • Must be able to work well under pressure

    Working Hours: Mainly evening and weekend hours, with the possibility of weekday day-time shifts as needed depending on SCI events and film schedule

  • Visitor Services Associate
  • Classification: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

    Department: Retail Operations

    Reports To: Box Office Coordinator

    Position Overview: The Visitor Services Associate is a member of the Retail Operations Team, the first and last line of contact at the Science Center of Iowa. The Retail Operations Team is responsible for ensuring a positive experience for the visitor at all times. The Retail Operations Team includes the Box Office, A-Ha! Store, Blank IMAX Dome Theater, Food Chain Café, school/group sales, birthday parties and facility rentals.

    Responsibilities:

    • Greet all guests promptly and in a friendly manner
    • Give accurate information to the visitors 100% of the time
    • Complete all transactions accurately and efficiently
    • Prepare accurate daily balance reports
    • Maintain a clean, neat, and well-stocked work area
    • While taking tickets, greet and welcome all visitors and groups into the Blank IMAX Dome theater
    • Assist any visitors or groups that may need extra time getting into the theater
    • Maintain a high level of cleanliness inside and outside the theater
    • Communicate effectively and appropriately over the phone, radio and through e-mailwith all SCI staff
    • Be ready to assist within all areas of the Retail Operations Team
    • Report to work in a timely manner
    • Maintain flexibility to work days, nights, weekends and holidays
    • Attend mandatory quarterly staff meetings
    • Perform other tasks, as assigned

    Requirements:

    • Previous cash handling experience required. Retail experience preferred.
    • Pleasant, outgoing and professional personality at all times
    • The ability to work well with the public or all ages and backgrounds and be comfortable in crowded situation while communicating effectively
    • Must be honest, dependable and able to work independently and with a team
    • Must be flexible to work in multiple areas throughout the day

    Working Hours: Varies with SCI and IMAX operating hours, but will include evening, weekend, Holiday and some daytime hours.

  • Cafe Associate
  • Classification: Part-time, Non-exempt

    Reports To: Cafe Coordinator

    Position Overview:

    This position is expected to provide exceptional guest service to all patrons visiting SCI’s Food Chain Café.   Under guided leadership from the Café Coordinator and the Director Retail Operations, the Café Associate will also be responsible for operational duties, as assigned, to ensure a satisfactory experience for all guests and patrons visiting SCI. 

    Responsibilities:

    • Maintain a commitment to excellent guest service in Café and all areas of SCI
    • Greet and tend to the needs of all guests in a timely manner
    • Processing all cash and credit card Point-of-Sale transactions accurately
    • Provide knowledgeable information regarding product offerings and general SCI information for guests
    • Accurately check all identification necessary to ensure patrons meet minimum age requirements for the purchase of alcohol products
    • Maintain the cleanliness of tables, floors, counters and windows
    • Maintain optimum food safety standards as required
    • Stock, Merchandise and Inventory Café supplies and products
    •  Assist Café Coordinator with various tasks and duties as assigned

    Requirements:

    • Must be of legal age to sell alcoholic beverages in accordance with the State of Iowa
    • Must have food service, retail, and/or strong customer service related experience
    • Must maintain a professional and polite demeanor at all times
    • Enjoy working with people in a public setting
    • Have great problem solving skills
    • Needs to have accurate and efficient bookkeeping/money handling skills
    • Well groomed, clean, and presentable
    • Ability to multi-task various duties and projects
    • Ability to lift 35 lbs. 
    • Must uphold the values and integrity of the Science Center of Iowa

    Working Hours:

    Part-time hours varying between the hours of operation for SCI and the Blank IMAX Dome Theater – this may include a combination of shifts during days, nights, weekends and holidays.

    Position Overview:

    This position is expected to provide exceptional guest service to all patrons of the Science Center of Iowa, especially at any special events, to guests or clients. Under guided leadership from the Café Coordinator and the Director of Retail Operations, the Bartender Associate will also be responsible for operational duties as assigned, to ensure a satisfactory experience for all guests, patrons, and clients of the Science Center of Iowa.

    Responsibilities:

    •  Independently execute bar operations for internal and external events and facility rentals
    •  Accurately process all cash and credit card transactions
    • Consistently check identification of guests to ensure patrons meet minimum age requirements for alcohol purchases
    •  Maintain cleanliness of work area
    •  Maintain optimal food safety practices
    • Stock merchandise and inventory as needed
    • Assist Café Coordinator with tasks and duties related to events
    • Additional duties as assigned

    Requirements:

    •  Must be of legal age to sell alcohol in accordance with Iowa Laws
    •  Must have food & beverage service, retail, and strong customer service experience
    • Must have a personable, enthusiastic, and engaging personality
    •  Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment
    • Must be able to multi-task and accomplish various duties
    •  Must be flexible, open-minded and able to react to guest and organizational needs
    • Ability to lift a minimum of 35 lbs.
    • Knowledge of alcoholic beverages
    • Well groomed, clean, and presentable
    • Must uphold the integrity of SCI

    Working Hours:

    Part-time hours will be assigned to support special events in addition to daily operations.  Shifts may include some evenings, weekends and holidays.

  • Seasonal Outreach Presenter
  • Classification: Part-Time, Seasonal, Non-Exempt

    Department: Science Learning

    Reports To: Director of Learning Experiences

    Position Overview: The Seasonal Outreach Presenter is responsible for delivering presentations of SCI interactive programs for public and group participants with high energy and enthusiasm. These programs include classroom and assembly-type science programs to schools, youth groups and other organizations throughout Iowa. This is primarily offsite delivery of programs, throughout the week, and may include weekends and evenings. A background check and driving record will be reviewed for this position.

    Responsibilities:

    • Deliver a varied repertoire of live programs and demonstrations, ranging from small to large format presentations
    • Monitor and assist with maintaining all equipment and supplies for program operations
    • Report consistent program attendance records with Program and Sales staff
    • Present a high level of professionalism in carrying out assigned duties and responsibilities
    • Work closely with the Outreach Program Coordinator on scheduling and evaluations
    • Responsible for daily programs and technology trouble shooting
    • Function as a direct representative from the science learning team to the public
    • Additional duties as assigned

    Requirements:

    • Awareness and sensitivity in interacting with diverse populations
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school; preferably in the sciences, education or theater
    • Experience in program presentation to small and large groups
    • Must be able to travel extensively throughout Iowa, including potential overnight stays
    • Ability to manipulate equipment, including some lifting and moving of materials up to 50 lbs
    • Ability to communicate complex science concepts in a fun, exciting and interesting fashion; high enthusiasm is required
    • Highly motivated and resourceful self-starter with effective multitasking skills
    • Excellent communication skills; engaging, entertaining and confident public speaker
    • Able to work independently, being flexible, dependable and resourceful
    • Service oriented; upholds Science Center of Iowa values and commitment to excellence
    • Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

    Working Hours: Hours will vary based on business needs, primarily Monday-Friday. However, schedules may include weekends, some evenings. Possible extended days and potential for overnight travel.

    Camp Educators are responsible for providing a fun, safe and educationally-effective learning environment in a science day-camp setting. Counselors are responsible for creating and implementing camp curriculum with exciting, hands-on activities around selected science topics. Counselors also are responsible for providing ongoing, daily supervision and mentoring up to 22 children ranging from 4-14 years old. Additional duties for camp related events and activities may be assigned throughout the year.

    Responsibilities:

    • Create and implement activity-based curriculum to facilitate skill-based learning on a variety of science themes and concepts
    • Present, teach and facilitate hands-on activities in a classroom setting with up to 22 children per class, 4-14 years old
    • Develop and implement behavior management and time management skills in the classroom
    • Follow the daily programming schedule in a timely manner
    • Create a supply list and daily schedule

    Skills:

    • Enthusiastic, energetic, hardworking, flexible, creative and timely
    • Comfortable with public speaking to children, parents, mentors and supervisors
    • Demonstrates excellent communication and problem-solving skills
    • Engages students and staff in a fun yet mature and professional manner
    • Organized self-starter; ability to work with little supervision

    Qualifications:

    • High School Diploma

  • iEARTH Camp Educator
  • Classification: Seasonal full-time, Non-exempt (Temporary)

    Department: Guided Learning

    Reports to: Guided Learning Manager

    Position Overview: iEARTH Camp Educators are responsible for providing a fun, safe and educationally-effective learning environment in an outdoor day-camp setting for half of the summer and leading camps for middle school age students on-site the remainder of the weeks. Counselors are responsible for creating and implementing camp curriculum with exciting, hands-on activities focused on the environment, art, recreation and technology. Counselors also are responsible for providing ongoing, daily supervision and mentoring for up to 22 children ranging from 4-14 years old. Additional duties for camp related events and activities may be assigned throughout the year.

    Responsibilities:

    • Implement activity-based curriculum to facilitate skill-based learning on a variety of science, art and environmental themes and concepts
    • Present, teach and facilitate hands-on activities in an outdoor setting at MacRae Park or Gray's Lake with up to 22 children per class, 4-14 years old (educators will teach all of these grade levels at some point during the summer)
    • Present, teach and facilitate hands-on activities in a classroom setting with up to 22 children per class, 12-14 years old
    • Develop and implement behavior management and time management skills
    • Follow the daily programming schedule in a timely manner
    • Create a supply list and daily schedule

    Skills:

    • Enthusiastic, energetic, hardworking, flexible, creative and timely
    • Comfortable with public speaking to children, parents, mentors and supervisors
    • Demonstrates excellent communication and problem-solving skills
    • Engages students and staff in a fun yet mature and professional manner
    • Organized self-starter; ability to work with little supervision
    • Physically able to handle this demanding camp which requires significant time spent outdoors

    Qualifications:

    • High School Diploma
    • College coursework in Education or Science related fields with a preference for environmental-themed coursework
    • Current driver's license
    • General knowledge of, or interest in, science and education
    • Previous experience working with youth and parents
    • Previous experience working in an outdoor environment
    • Must have access to a bike and helmet, be a proficient swimmer and cyclist; past experience with canoeing is preferred
    • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds

    Working Hours:

    Primarily Monday through Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

    Required training runs Monday, May 29, to Friday, June 8. Summer Camp runs Monday, June 11, to Friday, August 17. Staff is required to work Monday, August 20, unless prior arrangements have been made.

    • Must enjoy working as part of the Science Center of Iowa team
    • Must be able to pass background checks and DCI fingerprinting

    Working Hours: Varies based on class schedules—typically Monday thru Friday 3:00-5:30 pm
