  • Accounting Manager
  • Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

    Department: Finance and Administration

    Reports To: Vice President of Finance and Administration

    Direct Reports: No

    Position Overview:

    This key position provides the Science Center of Iowa with strong organizational skills to provide an accurate and complete financial system, treasury and internal controls processes, benefits and Human Resource processes.

    Responsibilities:

    • Prepare and monitor ongoing accounting functions: accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger and appropriate reporting
    • Prepare and provide analysis of financial statements for staff and Board of Directors
    • Contribute to and develop finance policies and procedures
    • Assist with preparation of annual operating budget and ongoing monitoring
    • Perform all treasury functions
    • Responsible for daily receipts, bank deposits and cash funds
    • Prepare for and manage annual financial and retirement plan audits
    • Analyze and administer employee benefits and liability, health, dental and work comp insurances
    • Administer Human Resources and employee benefits
    • Work on benefit plans to ensure best coverage for employees and optimized cost for SCI
    • File required state and federal filings within deadlines for payroll, COBRA, retirement and ACA
    • Ensure employees are properly enrolled in benefit plans
    • Develop and maintain an orientation plan for new hires
    • Issue certificates of insurance for additional insureds
    • Ensure the proper operating licenses are up to date
    • Send insurance company updates when new drivers or vehicles are added
    • Follow up on any open insurance claims and meet with any adjusters
    • Other duties as assigned

    Requirements:

    • 3 plus years previous experience preferred
    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting preferred
    • QuickBooks software knowledge preferred
    • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

    Working Hours:

    Primarily Monday through Friday 9:00-5:00; some nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

  • Programs Presenter
  • Classification: Part-Time

    Department: Science Learning

    Reports To: Director of Learning Experiences

    Direct Reports: None

    Scope:

    The Program Presenter is responsible for delivering presentations of SCI programs for public and group participants.  This may include both onsite and offsite delivery, throughout the week, weekend and evenings.

     Responsibilities:

    • Deliver a varied and changing repertoire of live programs and demonstrations ranging from small to large format presentations
    • Provide support with the Program Coordinators on program and project development
    • Maintain individual training log on program presentations and demonstrations
    • Coordinate with the Director of Learning Experiences to keep schedules up to date
    • On-floor supervision of program supplies in experience platforms and work alongside volunteers
    • Responsible for daily programs operation trouble shooting
    • Report consistent program attendance records and monitor their impact in supporting SCI’s mission and existing exhibits
    • Function as a direct representative from the science learning team to the public
    • Support exhibit staff; including but not limited to opening and closing of the experience platforms
    • Program Department daily operational support including but not limited to printing daily program guides, conducting live programs and labs and orientations for visiting schools/groups, including Outreach presentations
    • Additional duties as assigned

    Requirements:

    • Awareness and sensitivity in interacting with diverse populations
    • High school diploma with an interest in the sciences, education or theater
    • Experience in program presentation to small and large groups
    • Ability to communicate complex science concepts in a fun and interesting fashion
    • Motivated and resourceful self-starter with effective multitasking skills
    • Excellent communication skills; engaging, entertaining and confident public speaker
    • Able to work as part of a creative team, being flexible, dependable and creative

  • Visitor Services Associate
  • Classification: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

    Department: Retail Operations

    Reports To: Box Office Coordinator

    Position Overview: The Visitor Services Associate is a member of the Retail Operations Team, the first and last line of contact at the Science Center of Iowa. The Retail Operations Team is responsible for ensuring a positive experience for the visitor at all times. The Retail Operations Team includes the Box Office, A-Ha! Store, Blank IMAX Dome Theater, Food Chain Café, school/group sales, birthday parties and facility rentals.

    Responsibilities:

    • Greet all guests promptly and in a friendly manner
    • Give accurate information to the visitors 100% of the time
    • Complete all transactions accurately and efficiently
    • Prepare accurate daily balance reports
    • Maintain a clean, neat, and well-stocked work area
    • While taking tickets, greet and welcome all visitors and groups into the Blank IMAX Dome theater
    • Assist any visitors or groups that may need extra time getting into the theater
    • Maintain a high level of cleanliness inside and outside the theater
    • Communicate effectively and appropriately over the phone, radio and through e-mailwith all SCI staff
    • Be ready to assist within all areas of the Retail Operations Team
    • Report to work in a timely manner
    • Maintain flexibility to work days, nights, weekends and holidays
    • Attend mandatory quarterly staff meetings
    • Perform other tasks, as assigned

    Requirements:

    • Previous cash handling experience required. Retail experience preferred.
    • Pleasant, outgoing and professional personality at all times
    • The ability to work well with the public or all ages and backgrounds and be comfortable in crowded situation while communicating effectively
    • Must be honest, dependable and able to work independently and with a team
    • Must be flexible to work in multiple areas throughout the day

    Position Overview:

    This position is expected to provide exceptional guest service to all patrons of the Science Center of Iowa, especially at any special events, to guests or clients. Under guided leadership from the Café Coordinator and the Director of Retail Operations, the Bartender Associate will also be responsible for operational duties as assigned, to ensure a satisfactory experience for all guests, patrons, and clients of the Science Center of Iowa.

    Responsibilities:

    •  Independently execute bar operations for internal and external events and facility rentals
    •  Accurately process all cash and credit card transactions
    • Consistently check identification of guests to ensure patrons meet minimum age requirements for alcohol purchases
    •  Maintain cleanliness of work area
    •  Maintain optimal food safety practices
    • Stock merchandise and inventory as needed
    • Assist Café Coordinator with tasks and duties related to events
    • Additional duties as assigned

    Requirements:

    •  Must be of legal age to sell alcohol in accordance with Iowa Laws
    •  Must have food & beverage service, retail, and strong customer service experience
    • Must have a personable, enthusiastic, and engaging personality
    •  Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment
    • Must be able to multi-task and accomplish various duties
    •  Must be flexible, open-minded and able to react to guest and organizational needs
    • Ability to lift a minimum of 35 lbs.
    • Knowledge of alcoholic beverages
    • Well groomed, clean, and presentable
    • Must uphold the integrity of SCI

    Working Hours:

    Part-time hours will be assigned to support special events in addition to daily operations.  Shifts may include some evenings, weekends and holidays.

    Position Overview:

    This position is expected to provide exceptional guest service to all patrons visiting SCI’s Food Chain Café.   Under guided leadership from the Café Coordinator and the Director Retail Operations, the Café Associate will also be responsible for operational duties, as assigned, to ensure a satisfactory experience for all guests and patrons visiting SCI. 

    Responsibilities:

    • Maintain a commitment to excellent guest service in Café and all areas of SCI
    • Greet and tend to the needs of all guests in a timely manner
    • Processing all cash and credit card Point-of-Sale transactions accurately
    • Provide knowledgeable information regarding product offerings and general SCI information for guests
    • Accurately check all identification necessary to ensure patrons meet minimum age requirements for the purchase of alcohol products
    • Maintain the cleanliness of tables, floors, counters and windows
    • Maintain optimum food safety standards as required
    • Stock, Merchandise and Inventory Café supplies and products
    •  Assist Café Coordinator with various tasks and duties as assigned

    Requirements:

    • Must be of legal age to sell alcoholic beverages in accordance with the State of Iowa
    • Must have food service, retail, and/or strong customer service related experience
    • Must maintain a professional and polite demeanor at all times
    • Enjoy working with people in a public setting
    • Have great problem solving skills
    • Needs to have accurate and efficient bookkeeping/money handling skills
    • Well groomed, clean, and presentable
    • Ability to multi-task various duties and projects
    • Ability to lift 35 lbs.

    Working Hours:

    Part-time hours varying between the hours of operation for SCI and the Blank IMAX Dome Theater – this may include a combination of shifts during days, nights, weekends and holidays.

  • Camp Counselor/Educator
  • Classification: Seasonal Full-Time / Non-Exempt (Temporary)

    Department: Science Learning

    Reports To: Guided Learning Manager

    Position Overview:

    Camp Counselors/Educators are responsible for providing a fun, safe and educationally-effective learning environment in a science day-camp setting. Counselors are responsible for creating and implementing camp curriculum with exciting, hands-on activities around selected science topics. Counselors also are responsible for providing ongoing, daily supervision and mentoring up to 22 children ranging from 4-14 years old. Additional duties for camp related events and activities may be assigned throughout the year.

    Responsibilities:

    • Create and implement activity-based curriculum to facilitate skill-based learning on a variety of science themes and concepts
    • Present, teach and facilitate hands-on activities in a classroom setting with up to 22 children per class, 4-14 years old
    • Develop and implement behavior management and time management skills in the classroom
    • Follow the daily programming schedule in a timely manner
    • Create a supply list and daily schedule

    Skills:

    • Enthusiastic, energetic, hardworking, flexible, creative and timely
    • Comfortable with public speaking to children, parents, mentors and supervisors
    • Demonstrates excellent communication and problem-solving skills
    • Engages students and staff in a fun yet mature and professional manner
    • Organized self-starter; ability to work with little supervision

    Qualifications:

    • High School Diploma
    • College coursework in Education or Science related fields
    • General knowledge of, or interest in, science and education
    • Previous experience working with youth and parents
    • Current driver's license
    • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds

    Working Hours:

    Primarily Monday through Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.

    Required training runs Tuesday, May 30, to Friday, June 9. Summer Camp runs Monday, June 12, to Friday, August 18. Staff are required to work Monday, August 21, unless prior arrangements have been made.

    Reports To: Early Childhood Director

    Scope: SCI Preschool Master Teachers develop and implement the curriculum to meet the goals of the Science Center of Iowa’s Preschool program.

    Responsibilities:

    • Complete weekly lesson plans tied to Iowa Early Learning Standards and differentiated for all learners
    • Implement the Creative Curriculum, the Project Approach and STEM daily
    • Design and upkeep an appropriate, safe natural classroom environment
    • Meet with the Assistant Teacher to devise daily plans and prepare materials for daily use
    • Communicate weekly with families through email and phone calls
    • Design and carry out behavior plans as needed in partnership with families
    • Prepare and conduct parent-teacher conferences twice a year
    • Attend and assist with parent-preschooler special events during the school year as scheduled
    • Follow all policies and procedures of the Science Center of Iowa and the SCI Preschool
    • Be subject to evaluation at least once annually and open to regular observation and coaching
    • Attend all SCI Preschool staff meetings and SCI All Staff meetings
    • Buy into and uphold the SCI Commitment to Excellence
    • Complete all hiring requirements within the first 90 days of hire or earlier if specified

    Requirements:

    • BA/BS degree in early childhood education or other education degree, with early childhood endorsement
    • Current license or certification in the state of Iowa
    • Maintain current teaching certificate
    • Maintain current First Aid and CPR credentials
    • Obtain and maintain a Chauffeur’s License for transporting during field trips
    • Acquire 10 continuing education hours each year
    • Have a physical examination and TB test every two years
    • Must have teaching experience in the public school systems and/or preschool teaching experience
    • Has a deep understanding of developmentally appropriate practices
    • Has a passion and love for all young children and their families
