Hands-on Science for Homeschool Children
Days of Wonder is an exciting program for homeschool participants ages 7-12 providing an opportunity to explore a variety of topics at the Science Center of Iowa. Journey through the galaxy, discover the mystery of chemistry, and take a trip into the disaster zone exploring the science behind natural disasters as you participate in interactive, hands-on activities and experiments.
Days of Wonder 2007-2008 Schedule:
November 7, 2007 - Body Works
Take a trip into your own body! Test a model lung and get your heart in gear as you explore some of the major
systems inside the human body. Bonus: Explore SCI’s fall traveling exhibition Grossology: The (Impolite) Science
of the Human Body.
December 5, 2007 - CheMystery
Ooey, gooey, fizzy, foamy, sticky and slimy – investigate them all in this exciting overview of chemistry! Grab your
goggles and prepare for a mess as you study mysterious matters and curious concoctions. Bonus: Experience SCI’s
“Kitchen Chemistry” program!
January 9, 2008* - Creature Feature - Animals from the Heartland
Do you know what animals are indigenous to our climate? Can you identify different animal tracks? Take a look at
animals from around the Iowa heartland and meet a few of SCI’s resident creatures. Bonus: Discover SCI’s
“Cold-Blooded Critters” program!
February 6, 2008 - It's Electrifying
Learn what energy actually is and how and where you use it in your everyday life. Use what you learn to make
your own fun contraption – a clock out of a potato! Bonus: See what’s electrifying at the Science Center in
SCI’s “Zap²” program.
March 5, 2008 - Seeing Stars
From stars to constellations and the moon to astronauts, you’ll be amazed at what you find when you set your
sights on the sky. Get space-y as you explore Earth’s skies and beyond! Bonus: Stop in SCI’s Star Theater
for the “Iowa Skies Tonight” program.
April 2, 2008 - Weather Watch
Get in touch with your inner meteorologist as you investigate the weather! Build your own gadgets like barometers
and Beaufort Scales. Bonus: After practicing with your homemade instruments, visit the WHO-TV Channel 13
weather center inside SCI!
*Due to holiday break, this session will take place on the second Wednesday of the month.
Days of Wonder takes place on the first Wednesday of each month from 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm. Each class has a maximum capacity of 30 students. Cost is $10.00 for members and $12.00 for non-members. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend. Pre-registration and payment is required at least 5 days prior to each session
