The Science Center of Iowa is a center devoted to lifelong learning featuring six dynamic experience platforms and where visitors can explore and experiment. By placing the power of learning in the hands of the visitor, the programmatic emphasis is not on “what” to learn, but “how” to learn. In addition to the experience platforms, SCI showcases a 216-seat Blank IMAX Dome Theater, a 175-seat John Deere Adventure Theater featuring live performances, and a 50 foot domed Star Theater. The Iowa Learning Center houses the educational programs for SCI and features resources for educators and students, the renowned preschool, outreach and distance learning programs.
The Science Center of Iowa’s mission is to be the highest quality resource inspiring scientific exploration through interactive education, exhibits, and programs. Our goal is to be a quality community resource for informal science learning where children, families, school groups and individuals come to explore science and technology. As a fully accredited museum, the Science Center has reached the highest level of national recognition.
SCI programming reaches every county in the state of Iowa, promotes cultural awareness, and provides unique experiences to Iowans. The broad range of opportunities available speaks to the many roles SCI plays for the community for both education and fun, and is the foundation upon which SCI has built a successful organization for more than 30 years.
One of the main contributions that SCI makes with its hands-on exhibits, special-format theaters and other unique facilities is adding to the quality of life for Iowa residents and attracting distant visitors. The Science Center of Iowa also supports the larger interests of the Des Moines metro area by being a significant place for community gatherings. From board-level committees to activities for visitors, SCI brings people together. The Science Center also engages in long-term community building by establishing and maintaining collaborative partnerships with specific communities, including neighborhoods, cultural groups, Iowa businesses, the educational system, sponsoring investors, and numerous others who share the mission of developing skills and encouraging cultural exchange.
