Volunteers

Do you have a knack for knowledge?
An appetite for adventure?
A hand for helping?

Become a Science Center of Iowa volunteer!

Enjoy a rewarding experience when you become part of SCI's volunteer team!  SCI has added new opportunities to our volunteer program with unlimited opportunities for skill enhancement and personal satisfaction as well as social engagement.  There are a variety of positions for all skill levels and interests, from on the floor to behind the scenes!

See if any of these opportunities are right for YOU!

Science Program Volunteers

Help fulfill SCI's mission by supporting our core product alongside members of our Programs Team!  Assist in setting up for experiments, performing cart demonstrations and interacting with visitors among the exhibits to enrich their SCI experience.

NEW for Summer 2010!  Traveling Exhibit Hosts

Serve as an integral part of the SCI Team by volunteering for host shifts during the exhibition of RACE: Are We So Different? on display May 1 - Sept 6, 2010.  Hosts will familiarize themselves with this profound and highly personal exhibit experience so they are able to greet visitors, provide wayfinding directions and distribute appropriate exhibit materials.

Presenters, Guest Speakers and Mentors

If you have a science or education background and are interested in sharing your knowledge and skills with SCI's diverse audiences, we need you!  Volunteer to be featured at our monthly Cafe Scientifique events, Saturday special events or even to mentor Camp Counselors and Assistants.

Preschool Volunteers
The SCI Preschool needs help with various administrative duties, as lending a helping hand in the office allows our educators to maximize their time in the classroom!  Dates and times are extremely flexible.

Overnight Adventure Presenters and Helpers
Get involved in one of SCI’s greatest adventures!  During an Overnight Adventure, groups of all ages spend the night among the exhibits participating in fun, hands-on activities facilitated by volunteers.  Help is needed on Friday evenings during weeks a group has booked an adventure!

Junior Counselors

SCI Junior Counselors are ages 16 - 18 and work with Counselors and Assistants to contribute as needed to the overall experience of SCI's Summer and Winter Camps.  This is an excellent opportunity for high school students needing volunteer hours and seeking quality pre-professional experience in a high-energy environment!

Community Relations Representatives

This role is responsible for welcoming participants to the Science Center and ensuring that their visit gets off to a great start.  Offer directions, distribute daily program guides and answer questions during SCI's busiest times of year, such as Spring Break or during special events.

IMAX® Ushers
Be an integral part of SCI’s Blank IMAX Dome Theater as an Usher.  Provide a positive experience for film audiences by assisting participants in entering and exiting the theater and lending a helping hand with any needs that might arise during the film.

Retail Specialists
Become a part of the team at SCI’s A-ha! Store.  Retail Specialists in the A-ha! Store will be responsible for setting up displays, restocking merchandise, entering new merchandise into the database, pricing merchandise and assisting shoppers.

Membership Volunteers
Support and promote the Science Center’s membership program by assisting the Membership Manager!  This position can provide administrative support toward member relations, provide a helping hand at member-exclusive events and much more.

There's always more to explore at SCI as a VOLUNTEER!
