  • Solar Eclipse Event
  • 6:30 PM
  • FREE EVENT!

Join SCI and the Des Moines Astronomical Society to view the 2014 partial solar eclipse! Staff and volunteers will provide telescopes with solar filters for the public to safely view the eclipse.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. We will view 39% obscuration in Iowa. This is the last solar eclipse visible from Iowa until 2017 when we will see more than 90% obscuration.

The timeline for the solar eclipse viewing event is:

    4:00pm - Event starts
    4:31pm - Eclipse begins
    5:47pm - Maximum obscuration
    6:20pm - Sunset
    6:30pm - Event ends

This event is in partnership with the Des Moines Astronomical Society.
