    Alex Braidwood, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design, Iowa State University

    Sound becomes second nature as we move through our everyday lives… But what happens when we start listening with science in mind? Artist and professor Alex Braidwood has traveled the world capturing audio that underlies different cultural experiences, creating interactive sound installations and recording an experimental nature-sound album.

    Join Braidwood and SCI as we explore the process behind sound science, hear audio stories from his travels and discover the amazing things that can happen when we start listening not solely as citizens but as scientists.

  • Downtown Earth Day Tour
  • 11:00 AM 
  • Join us for Des Moines' annual Downtown Earth Day Tour, a partnership between SCI and the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

    Use the trails to walk or bike between locations and participate in an Earth Day Scavenger Hunt. Plan a stop at the Riverwalk Hub to grab a refreshment and learn about river conservation with Iowa Rivers Revival. Each organization will have activities between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.

    Admission is FREE on Earth Day 2017 thanks to support from The Principal.

    NEW! From 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, documentary IMAX films are FREE thanks to support from the Iowa Space Grant Consortium.

  • Star Party at Ashton Observatory

  • Location: 8755 W 122nd St N, Mingo, IA 50168

    Get out of town to get out of this world! Just a short drive away from Des Moines, we’ll host this month’s Star Party at Des Moines Astronomical Society’s Ashton Observatory. As the sun sets, the observatory’s true dark sky will be the perfect backdrop for viewing of the peak of the Lyrid Meteor Shower. We’re sure to see a stellar show of meteors shooting across the sky, along with Jupiter and Mars!
