Geometry Playground

See it at SCI October 31, 2015 – May 30, 2016!

Math gets moving and so will you in this fast-paced, hands-on exhibit created by the Exploratorium!

Geometry Playground will change the way you think about geometry. This traveling exhibition engages your hands, brain and body in playful investigations of this most visible branch of math.

Climb on structures inspired by geometric principles, and discover the angles, lines and symmetry that shape your everyday world. Discover the organic side of geometry with examples of natural symmetry and mathematical structures you can find in your backyard.

  • The Geometry of Seeing: Take a seat in the Distorted Chair and play Anamorphic Hopscotch as you experience the invisible geometry of light.

  • The Geometry of Moving: Experience geometry in motion and climb through the 10-foot Gyroid to learn about angles, arcs and other shapes created when people and things are in motion. Note: For the safety of our participants, children must be at least 47-inches tall to climb on the Gyroid.

  • The Geometry of How Things Fit Together: Crank the Gear Cube and manipulate the Geometron to discover how shapes fit together to make patterns.

  • The Geometry Garden: Explore this cabinet of geometric curiosities - from crystals to spiraling seashells - and see the beauty that emerges from the basic rules of geometry.

Experience mathematics in a whole new way with Geometry Playground at the Science Center of Iowa!

Note: For the safety of our participants, children must be at least 47-inches tall to climb on the Gyroid.
