SCI's Girls in Science Initiative aims to empower and equip girls in science, technology, engineering and math.
Research shows that while women are attending and completing college at higher rates than ever before, they remain underrepresented in STEM fields. Through our Girls in Science events, girls have opportunities to meet and interact with female role models and learn about their careers.
Girls in Science Events:
SciGirls® Summer Camps (Grades 3–8)
July 27-31 (Grades 3-4) - If you like science and creating, this is the camp for you! We will explore different ways to create, combining conventional crafting with science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Girls in Science Pajama Parties — Almost Overnights (Grades 2–8)
Held each fall (dates will be announced soon)
Girls in grades 2–5 and 6–8 are invited to a fun, late-night adventure at SCI! This evening event features hands-on activities, team challenges, a pizza party and the opportunity to meet local women from STEM fields. By the time they go home to bed, they'll be dreaming about how science can be a part of their future!
Tickets cost $7.00 per participant. Advanced registration is required.
Meals with Mentors (Grades 7–12)
Held each fall (date will be announced soon)
Girls in grades 7 through 12 can apply for this unique event where they will meet female undergraduates studying for a degree in a STEM field as well as working female scientists. The dinner will feature a keynote speaker as well as group challenges that give girls the opportunity to interact with as many of the attending female STEM professionals as possible.
This event is free for girls to attend.
SciGirls® Winter Camps (Grades 2–4)
Check back in the fall for details about Girls in Science Winter Camps.
Girls in Science Festival (All Ages)
February 2021 (date will be announced soon)
Interested in learning more about science, technology, engineering and math? Girls and families of all ages are invited to SCI's Girls in Science Festival presented by Flint Hills Resources to explore a variety of STEM careers and connect with female role models. Try hands-on activities at festival booths, hear personal “STEM Stories” and register for workshops conducted by scientists and SCI Staff.
Festival activities are included with SCI general admission.
The Science Center of Iowa is an official SciGirls® museum. Based on the best practices in STEM education for girls, SciGirls’ videos, online resources, hands-on activities and professional development work together to address a singular but powerful goal: to inspire, enable and maximize STEM learning and participation for all girls, encouraging greater interest in these careers.
