  • Girls in Science Festival
  • All DayPrincipal Hall
  • Interested in learning more about science, technology, engineering and math? Girls and families of all ages are invited to SCI's Girls in Science Festival to explore a variety of careers in the "STEM Zones" and connect with female role models and mentors. Attendees also will be able to register for workshops conducted by scientists. Engineering workshops presented by Flint Hills Resources. Festival is included with SCI general admission.

     

    STEM Zones

    Mingle with female STEM mentors from a variety of fields in a fun, informal environment. Stations will feature a hands-on activity led by a local scientist:

    • Play a tune on a piano made from vegetables with Area515.
    • Try your hand at welding with Vermeer’s welding simulator.
    • Get up close with insects from DuPont Pioneer entomologist Laura Higgins, Ph.D.
    • See a human heart, lungs and brain with the University of Iowa’s SySTEMs of Discovery.
    • Add your mark to a graffiti wall with Iowa State University Engineering Community Outreach.
    • And more!

    Workshops

    Build, code, explore animal adaptations and more in collaborative workshops led by inspiring women in STEM. One-hour workshops are for girls only, and space is limited. To register, call 515-274-6868 ext. 222.

    • Dazzle Robots (Grades 1-3): Here ye, Hear ye, fair maidens! Come and learn to code by creating enchanting jewelry that will guide you on a princess quest, discover sparkling jewels, be challenged to follow the Queens commands and design your own royal coach.
    • Zap, Buzz, Blink: All About Electricity (Grades 4-8): Light it up with this hands-on electricity workshop!

    • Building Big: Architecture and Engineering (Grades 1-3): Build your own structure, and test its strength.
    • Test, Tinker, Try Again: Becoming an Engineer (Grades 4-8): Learn how the design cycle can help you solve problems.

    • Amazing Animal Adaptations (Grades 1-3): Meet some extraordinary critters, and learn how their adaptations help them thrive in nature.
    • All About Genes (4-8): Learn about the biological building blocks that make you YOU!
