  • Recognizing Race: A Historical Perspective
  • 6:00 PM
  • Racism has infiltrated pop culture throughout American history, weaving its way into advertising, marketing and everyday language. Household names like Aunt Jemima and Frito Bandito have mainstreamed racism, as consumers unconsciously purchase products that perpetuate stereotyping of African-American and Latino cultures, among others. Just as pop culture shaped the discourse of diversity in America, each state played its own role in Civil Rights history, and Iowa is no different.

Hear from local experts in this interactive presentation, and learn how about the role Iowans played in the national push for civil rights and equality in America.

    • Brian Behnken, Associate Professor of History, Iowa State University
    • Krystal Gladden, Museum Educator, African American Museum of Iowa
    • Katy Swalwell, Assistant Professor of Education, Iowa State University
    • Leah Driscoll, Teacher, Meskwaki Settlement School

Each event opens with the opportunity to experience the RACE: Are We So Different? exhibition from 5:00-6:00 pm for a discounted rate. Or join us at 6:00 pm for the free panel discussion.

The Recognizing Race series is a partnership between the Science Center of Iowa and Iowa State University.
