  • Cafe Scientifique: Immunization Investigation
  • 5:30 PM
  • Location: Science Center of Iowa, 401 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway
Presenter: Dr. Nathan Boonstra, general pediatrician, Blank Children's Pediatric Clinic

Vaccines have eradicated a laundry list of common diseases, reducing once-deadly illnesses to common acronyms like MMR and DTaP. But why doesn’t everyone wear the post-vaccination Band-Aid like a badge of health and safety? As myths circulate surrounding the effectiveness of vaccines and their side effects, some patients opt out of the basic list of childhood immunizations, putting their children and others at risk. Besides preventing disease in individuals, vaccines likewise protect communities by stopping the spread of disease, even to those who aren’t vaccinated.

Join us as we explore how vaccines work from the biological basics to the social impact, and debunk the common myths surrounding childhood immunizations.

    About the presenter:

Dr. Nathan Boonstra is a general pediatrician at Blank Children’s Pediatric Clinic in Des Moines Iowa. Dr. Boonstra attended medical school at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, and completed his pediatric training at Blank Children’s Hospital. Dr. Boonstra is involved with projects to improve vaccination rates around the state of Iowa as well as on a national level, and has a special interest in using social media to dispel myths surrounding pediatric vaccinations. In 2014, Dr. Boonstra received the Childhood Immunization Champion Award for the state of Iowa from the CDC, and in 2015 was recognized by the Iowa Department of Public Health with an Immunization Champion Award of Excellence. Dr. Boonstra lives in Urbandale with his wife and two boys. Dr. Boonstra can be found on Facebook and Twitter and blogs at pedsgeekmd.com.
