  • On the second Tuesday of the month, SCI invites the community to join the conversation over cocktails and coffee! Café Scientifique features cutting edge, adult-oriented science forums with leaders in science and technology.

  • Café Scientifique: Old Bones, New Discoveries

  • Join Dr. Sarah Warning, assistant professor at Des Moines University, as she discusses how paleontologists use fossils to understand the lives of dinosaurs.

    By examining fossils, paleontologists are able to determine how long a dinosaur lived, how fast they grew up, how big they were and how they moved. Learn the process of how we know what we know about dinosaurs.

  • Girls are invited to a fun late-night adventure at SCI! By the time they go home to bed, they'll be dreaming big about how science can be a part of teir future! Activities will include getting-to-know-you cames, team challenges and hands-on activities and local women from STEM fields sharing their stories and discussing their careers.

  • Hair-raising experiments, bubbling potions and visual illusions abound during Spooky Science at the Science Center of Iowa! Dust the cobwebs off of your costume and join us on October 28 to trick-or-treat your way throughout the building and experience themed programming!

    Spooky Science activities include:

    • A costume contest, featuring discounted admission for all dressed-up guests
    • A meet-and-greet with SCI’s own creepy crawly critters
    • Live experiments that fizz, bubble and ooze
    • "Spookified" live programming
    • Trick-or-treating around SCI, featuring candy and other giveaways
    • Mad science experiments with ISU Chemistry Community Learning
    • Spooky specimens provided by Des Moines University medical students

    Spooky Science activities are included with general admission to SCI; always free for members!

  • Star Party at Ewing Park
  • 7:00 PM 
  • Location: Ewing Park, 5300 Indianola Road, Des Moines

    Join SCI staff at Ewing Park and observe the Moon, planets and other celestial objects! SCI staff will set up several telescopes for you to use. This event is free to the public.

    This event is held in partnership with the Des Moines Astronomical Society (DMAS).
