Pint Size Science

Spark curiosity and wonder through play!

Pint Size Science (PSS) classes provide stepping stones for early learners to explore science topics and help parents/caregivers feel more confident being a STEM coach for their child.

Workshops are held for children, ages 3–5 years old with a caring adult, from 9:15–10:15 AM on Thursdays in February.

February Workshops

Before birds took to the skies, there were flying reptiles. SCI’s traveling exhibit, Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs, is the inspiration for our Pint Size Science workshops. During each session, we will read a book, explore a hands-on activity and sing/dance to a fun song.

February 6: What is a Pterosaur? - They are not dinosaurs, and they are not birds. Learn about what makes Pterosaurs so special.

February 13: How can lizards fly? - Pterosaurs were the first animals to have powered flight. Explore the physics of flight and how these reptiles were able to travel through the air.

February 20: How big are Pterosaurs? - Pterosaurs came in many different sizes. Investigate the size and scale of various Pterosaurs.

February 27: Why do Paleontologists study fossils? - Pterosaurs have long been extinct. Discover how scientists learn about animals and plants that lived so long ago.

Cost per student:

  • Members = $11
  • Non-Members = $22

Cost for parents/caring adult: No additional cost for parents that register for the workshop*

* Only those that are registered, both students and parents/caring adult, can attend the workshop. Children younger than 3 attending the workshop do not need to be registered. Registered participants receive admission to the Science Center of Iowa for the remainder of the day.

The science behind the PSS program:

Pint Size Science classes are designed to reflect current brain research, which shows that academic learning is directly connected to emotion. Young children need a caring adult to share their early STEM experiences, and Pint Size Science classes provide opportunities for young children and their parent or caregiver to learn together.
