Special Events

SCI’s special events encompass a variety of educational opportunities and seasonal occasions.

Programs

  • Spooky Science

Hair-raising experiments, bubbling potions and visual illusions abound during Spooky Science at the Science Center of Iowa! Dust the cobwebs off of your costume and trick-or-treat your way throughout the building and experience themed programming!

Wear your costume and receive $1 off general admission to SCI.

  • Pumpkin Plunge

Don't pitch your old pumpkins just because Beggars' Night is over... Toss them off our terrace for a lesson about gravity!

  • Downtown Earth Day Tour

Celebrate Earth Day at the Downtown Earth Day Tour, a collaboration between SCI, the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, The Riverwalk HUB and Iowa Rivers Revival. Interact with organizations focused on conservation, and learn how to live more sustainably!

  • Countdown to Apollo 50

On July 20, 1969, humans first set foot on the Moon. This year, at the Science Center of Iowa, we are celebrating those first small steps and looking forward to the next giant leaps in space exploration.

  • Noon Year's Eve

Why should adults have all the fun ringing in the new year at midnight? Bring the whole family to SCI to celebrate the new year 12 hours early!

  • Des Moines Mini Maker Faire

Maker Faire is a gathering of fascinating, curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do. From engineers to artists to scientists to crafters, Maker Faire is a venue for these "makers" to show hobbies, experiments, projects and more. Glimpse the future and get inspired!

  • World Turtle Day

Celebrate the turtles of Iowa during this special World Turtle Day event! Join us for turtle programming all day throughout SCI to learn about the different turtle species in Iowa, conservations efforts to help protect turtles, and even get the chance to meet and greet a turtle up close! • SCI's Big Blast

Have a blast while supporting science education!

Proceeds from this gala are critical for supporting opportunities for more than 320,000 children, teens and adults to engage in science learning through interactive exhibits, live programming, special events, workshops and camps at SCI each year.
