Stay Curious—Stay Human

AI@SCI is the Science Center of Iowa’s initiative to understand and responsibly teach the continuously evolving branch of computer science known as artificial intelligence (AI). We offer playful, hands-on experiences that make AI approachable regardless of a learner’s age, background, or prior knowledge. We have designed methods to communicate AI concepts intuitively to break down the misconception that the field is “only for experts.”

We promote AI education by equipping teachers, students, parents, and museum visitors with information and resources they can use to understand the power, risks, and basic mechanics of the AI technology field.

Why SCI? Why Now?

AI is Here

AI is no longer abstract—it recommends videos, powers voice assistants, supports healthcare diagnostics, and even influences hiring and financial decisions. Learners of all ages benefit from understanding the invisible systems that are shaping their daily choices and opportunities.

We Need Critical Thinkers

As an informal educational institution, SCI is uniquely positioned to help learners ask “How does this work?” and “What does this mean for me?” By demystifying AI, we foster skepticism, curiosity, and ethical questioning—skills essential for navigating a world where technologies evolve faster than policy and social norms.

Responsible Usage Matters

AI is powerful, but also fraught with challenges: bias, misinformation, environmental costs, job displacement, and privacy concerns. SCI is leading the way in responsible teaching by presenting both the potential and the pitfalls, helping our visitors critically evaluate hype versus reality.

Lifelong Learning & Workforce Preparation

SCI engages and inspires Iowans along their journey of lifelong science learning. By providing exposure to AI concepts and tools, we prepare our community for a workforce where AI literacy will be as fundamental as digital literacy is today. This builds resilience and adaptability in the face of rapid change.

By embracing the power of AI, we demonstrate that this technology isn’t limited to tech companies or universities—it’s for everyone, and it can be explored in safe, supportive, and human-centered environments!
