- Wednesday April 8, 2026
The Science Center of Iowa (SCI) will host its 11th Des Moines Mini Maker Faire on Saturday, April 11, from 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Celebrated as the “Greatest Show (& Tell) on Earth,” the Des Moines Mini Maker Faire is an all-ages festival that highlights creativity, innovation, and do-it-yourself ingenuity. Makers from across the Midwest will showcase projects that inspire discovery and hands-on learning.
Featured participants include:
- Artemis Return to the Moon – A NASA Solar System Ambassador will present exhibits and multimedia content on the United States’ return to the moon, including updates on the current Artemis II mission and future plans.
- GLiB Games – A Des Moines–based game design company specializing in entry-level and family board games. Attendees will learn about prototyping, testing, and iteration, as well as how AI, 3D printing, and laser cutting accelerate game design innovation.
- Japan America Society of Iowa (JASI) – The Science of Origami Project explores the connection between traditional paper folding and engineering. The program highlights the Miura Fold, developed by a Japanese astrophysicist, which enables compact folding and efficient deployment of large structures, including satellite solar panels.
- Powerful Innovations – Inventor Troy Powers will showcase science fiction–inspired creations, including lightsabers and a working hoverboard.
- SCORCH Works Homemade Tools & Toys – Maker Scott Skorch, a regular at Maker Faires nationwide, will demonstrate handcrafted toys and machines that illustrate scientific principles.
Attendees can also participate in interactive “Skills Stations” to explore their own creativity and continue making at home. Activities include weaving, robotics, generative AI, and pet rock creation.
The festival atmosphere will feature food trucks from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., including Cups of Kindness, Totally Rolled Ice Cream, and Roadside Tacos.
“Maker Faire is about igniting curiosity and celebrating creativity,” said Jolie Pelds, SCI’s Director of STEM Innovation. “It’s a one-of-a-kind experience where visitors can not only witness innovation but actively participate in it.”
