Mixology Night moving to third Fridays in 2019

  • Tuesday November 27, 2018

DES MOINES, IA: After eight years of hosting "First Friday" events geared toward adults, the Science Center of Iowa (SCI) has announced that it will be moving the popular Mixology Nights to third Fridays starting in January 2019.

The decision is in response to an influx of first Friday events in the community.

"The social landscape of the community is much different now than it was when the event began," said Curt Simmons, SCI president and CEO. "When we started Mixology, there was a void in first Friday programming. Now, we have an opposite issue, and we decided it was time for a change."

Mixology Night was created in 2010. At the time, SCI was hosting Body Worlds: Vital, a traveling exhibit geared to a more adult audience than typical exhibits had been, and the adult-focused evening was designed to attract a new audience. Since then, the program has grown to average several hundred attendees per month.

"In the beginning, having 100 people in attendance was a huge success," said Simmons. "Now, we're averaging nearly 500 – with our biggest event ever having more than 1400 people."

Starting in January, Mixology Night will move to the third Friday of each month. The timeframe remains the same (5:30-9:00 pm) as does the pricing ($7 per person; free for members).

The final "first Friday" Mixology is on December 7, featuring the "Science of Brewing" with the Altoona-based microbrewery Brightside Aleworks.

"Third Friday" events begin January 18 with the "Science of a Hangover."

Attendees must be 21 years of age to attend Mixology Night. For details, as well as the full schedule, visit www.sciowa.org/mixology.
