SCI’s BIG BLAST Returns October 18 to Celebrate 55 Years of Science, Wonder & Community

The Science Center of Iowa (SCI) invites the community to step back in time for an unforgettable evening at SCI’s BIG BLAST, its annual fundraising event, returning on Saturday, October 18, 2025, from 6:00–10:00 PM at the Science Center of Iowa in downtown Des Moines.
This year’s event marks a special milestone: 55 years since SCI first opened its doors on October 17, 1970. To celebrate, guests are encouraged to channel their inner early-70s style — grab that vintagemaxi dress, metallic jumpsuit, or velvet blazer you’ve been saving for a night of groovy glamour — and join in a retro-themed celebration filled with food, flair, and science magic.
“SCI’s BIG BLAST is not just a fundraiser — it’s a full-sensory celebration of the people, programs, and passion that have defined SCI for more than half a century,” said Curt Simmons, President & CEO of the Science Center of Iowa. “This year, we’re honoring our roots while investing in the next generation of scientists, dreamers, and changemakers.”
Early bird tickets are on sale now for just $55 — a nod to SCI’s 55th anniversary. Prices increase to $100 each beginning September 15, so guests are encouraged to grab theirs early.
The event will feature:

• Immersive programming and throwback nostalgia
Proceeds from SCI’s BIG BLAST support hands-on science learning through outreach programs, exhibits, workshops, and camps.
