Science Center of Iowa and Polk County Conservation Invite Public to iNaturalist BioBlitz at Jester Park

  • Friday May 15, 2026

The Science Center of Iowa (SCI) and Polk County Conservation (PCC) are partnering to host a community-wide iNaturalist BioBlitz at Jester Park on Saturday, June 20, 2026. The free, family-friendly event invites participants of all ages to explore nature while contributing to real scientific research.

A BioBlitz is a hands-on biodiversity event where people work together to find and document as many species as possible in a set place and time. Using the free iNaturalist app, participants photograph plants, animals, fungi, and insects, uploading observations that contribute to a global database used by scientists, educators, and conservationists.

Set across Jester Park’s 1,661 acres along the western shore of Saylorville Lake, the event will feature a variety of engaging activities, including a brief orientation and iNaturalist training, guided walks with habitat experts, and time for independent exploration. Participants will be able to track discoveries in real time and gather at the end of the day to highlight findings and learn how their contributions support ongoing conservation work in Polk County.

“This event is about connecting people to nature while empowering them to contribute to real scientific research,” said Curt Simmons, President & CEO of SCI. “Whether you’re new to exploring outdoors or already love nature, this is a chance to learn, discover, and make a meaningful impact.”

Data collected during the BioBlitz will support both the global iNaturalist community and local conservation efforts, helping inform future land management and habitat planning.
