Science Center of Iowa Invites Iowans to Explore the Science Behind Mental Health

Mental health is an essential part of overall well-being, yet conversations about it can still be difficult. Beginning Saturday, September 26, 2026, the Science Center of Iowa (SCI) invites visitors to explore those conversations through Mental Health: Mind Matters, an immersive special exhibition that uses hands-on interactives, multimedia experiences and personal stories to foster understanding, empathy and awareness.

Developed by the Science Museum of Minnesota from an exhibition originally created by Heureka, The Finnish Science Centre, Mental Health: Mind Matters explores the science behind our thoughts, emotions and behaviors while encouraging visitors to better understand the many ways people experience mental health.

Through interactive experiences, visitors will:

• Explore how the brain influences emotions, thoughts and behavior.
• Learn how our understanding and treatment of mental health conditions has evolved over time.
• Experience activities designed to build empathy for people living with conditions such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
• Discover resources that encourage continued learning and conversations about mental health.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than one in five U.S. adults experiences a mental illness each year, making mental health one of the most important public health conversations of our time. By creating a welcoming space for dialogue and learning, SCI hopes to inspire visitors to better understand themselves and others.

"Mental Health: Mind Matters gives visitors the opportunity to explore the science of mental health in an engaging, thoughtful environment while encouraging empathy, curiosity and meaningful conversations that can continue long after they leave SCI."

The exhibition is designed for teens and adults, though families with younger children are welcome to experience it together. While some content addresses mature topics, it is presented in a thoughtful, age-appropriate manner that encourages discussion and reflection.

Mental Health: Mind Matters will be on display at the Science Center of Iowa September 26, 2026, through March 21, 2027, and is included with regular SCI admission.
